Suddie crime wave

first_imgDear Editor,A crime wave is now ripping through the once quiet and peaceful location of my village, Suddie, Essequibo Coast, and the neighbouring environment, with the perpetrators posing a challenge to Police, with most incidents remaining unsolved, much to the suffering of the local residents.I was the most recent victim, as the bottom-flat of my residence was broken into on January 26 and a quantity of articles were stolen, with the majority of items being cooked food from the refrigerator, along with beverages and some cash. From all appearances, it would seem that the culprit(s) was/were more interested in foodstuff items, as they did not steal a computer, radio or cellphone, among other valuables which were at their disposal.A crow bar, left behind by the bandit(s), was used to gain entry through the bottom-half of the back door. The Police were alerted to the scene and dusted for fingerprints from the well-ransacked house, with books and stationary scattered about in an apparent hope to find money.During the first month of the year, a business next door to me was broken into during the night while the owner was at home. A quantity of articles were stolen from her shop.Just a short distance away, an attempt was also made to break into a shop, but it was foiled after an alarm was raised while the bandits were in the process of wrenching-off the padlocks during the night. At the Sea Road area, an elderly woman had her house set alight by bandits who escaped with some ,000 in cash and household items after gaining entry. A known character was charged for the offence and remanded. In the Suddie Housing Scheme, a sickly woman who lives alone, left to get medication in the city, only to return and that her house was broken into and all her household items stolen.Several other incidents of break and enter and larceny were committed during the past two months in the Onderneeming Sand Pit area, inclusive of Little Red Village housing scheme, with the victims still mystified by the Police failing miserably to suppress the alarming situation.Yours faithfully,Baliram Persaudlast_img read more

Amazon Remembers Its Origins: Buys Abebooks

first_imgCurrently, there are over 110 million books from over 13,000 sellers available on the site. Besides AbeBooks, the company also runs the book search aggregation site BookFinder and provides a sales and inventory management through Fillz.com.AbeBooks also has a very active user community. Judging from the email AbeBooks send out to its sellers, it would seem that nothing much is going to change on the site for now and that the management team at AbeBooks is also going to remain in place. frederic lardinois Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Amazon today announced that it will acquire AbeBooks, the online marketplace for used and rare books. Given the breadth of Amazon’s product line, it is sometimes easy to forget that, at its core, Amazon is still a book seller, even if its product line now ranges from hosted Web 2.0 services to bulk groceries. AbeBooks, which was formerly known as the Adcanved Book Exchange, launched in Canada and the US in 1996 and has since expanded to Germany, Italy, France, the UK, and Spain. AbeBooks will continue to operate under its own name.In many ways, buying AbeBooks is almost the antithesis of of what Amazon has done lately with pushing into electronic books with the Kindle and hosting Web 2.0 services like EC2, S3, and its recently launched Flexible Payment Service.AbeBooks has generally stuck to its roots, by creating a thriving marketplace for rare and used book sellers worldwide. It is not clear if there will be any direct benefits of this acquisition by Amazon for the merchants on AbeBooks, though chances are that Amazon is going to start integrating the AbeBooks inventory into its own store. This will give the AbeBooks sellers access a far larger market to sell to than just the AbeBooks community, though many of them were already listing their inventory on Amazon (and other services like Alibris and Biblio.com anyway). Checkpoint Systems Announces EVOLVE-Store to Increase Retail Store Conversion Rates

first_imgCheckpoint Systems recently announced its EVOLVE-Store™ solution while at the Retail Asset Protection Conference. The rise in omni-channel shopping is driving retailers to make key investments in their inventory management to conquer the current and growing demand and fulfill customer expectations. However, with customers choosing how they want to shop and where, it is crucial that physical stores increase their conversion rates by making every visitor to their store count. Based upon this market need, Checkpoint developed EVOLVE-Store.EVOLVE-Store’s three components include the following:- Sponsor – EVOLVE-Store Network combines different sensing devices into a single network, enabling retailers to capture the event data. It also enables remote technical support to stores for maximum system uptime and fast response.EVOLVE-Store App provides real-time visibility of the store sensing devices’ activities and encourages attentive staff. Helping store staff to manage these activities efficiently on the shop floor enhances the shopping experience for customers.EVOLVE-Store Analytics delivers chain-wide visibility (whether a retailer has 10 or 10,000 stores) of the sensing devices’ data, including all staff interactions via the App. It helps drive store policy compliance and measures the effectiveness of processes. Being a software-as-a-service platform, any reporting updates and improvements are instantly applied to data, removing the need for retailers to develop their own.According to Carl Rysdon, vice president of inventory control solutions for Checkpoint, “While fighting competition from the online stores, store managers must strike a balance between adequately staffing the sales floor and completing back-office tasks. At the same time, they must create a welcoming store environment that encourages customers to keep coming back, while discouraging opportunities for theft. EVOLVE-Store brings together people, processes and products to expand the potential of physical stores by combining various sensing devices into a single, actionable data-led solution, with enterprise-wide data analytics.”Key capabilities:Visitor Counting: Measuring a store’s hourly visitor flow across the day can help see opportunities to match staffing levels to visitors and drive up conversion.Occupancy Management: Having real-time visibility of the number of visitors to stores and/or fitting rooms can help store staff drive up sales conversions while organically reducing the opportunities for theft.Booster/Magnet Monitor: Safeguarding stores with Checkpoint’s HyperGUARD Booster/Magnet detection systems can deter, detect or displace the threat of organized retail crime gangs shoplifting on premises. With the EVOLVE-Store App, staff are alerted to the threat entering stores.System Control: Using the EVOLVE-Store App, key staff can control their EVOLVE EAS systems in the event of technical issues, to avoid major disruption to the store environment, allowing time for Checkpoint’s Technical Service team to diagnose any issues or faults remotely or by visiting the store.Alarm Management: Capturing all the alarm events from EVOLVE EAS detection systems can help identify stores at risk. When used with the optional EVOLVE-Store App, staff responses to alarm events can be included in the analysis. With Checkpoint’s RFID-as-EAS detection systems, staff can also be alerted about the number of RFID-tagged items detected via the EVOLVE-Store App.Built upon an Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform.EVOLVE-Store is backed by a global technical service from Checkpoint that supports this retail investment over its lifetime. The new solution is available immediately.
