Photo: Emirates Emirates is talking with authorities from other countries about biometric boarding after receiving approval to offer the technology on flights to the US.The approval came after a successful trial on services from Dubai to New York and Los Angeles.READ: More than 150,000 stranded after Thomas Cook collapses. The Dubai-based airline says it is the first carrier outside the US to receive approval for biometric boarding from US Customs Border Protection (CBP) and expects to implement for all 12 of its American destinations by year-end.It has also started rolling out biometric boarding for passengers on the US end with the system in place on its Washington-Dubai flights with more to come. The airline says the process reduces the time for identity checks to two seconds or less and does not require pre-registration.Customers who choose not to use the technology can simply approach the gate desks.Emirates does not store any biometric records of its customers and says the data is managed securely by CBP.The pilot program through the July to August peak period involving the New York and Los Angeles services saw some flights achieving 100 percent biometric boarding. The system clicks the passenger’s photo at the boarding ate and this is then matched against CBP’s gallery in real-time to verify the person’s identity in two seconds or less.Emirates cautions that the system may not work for those who haven’t traveled to the US. for a long time or whose images are not in CBP’s gallery.“Our ultimate aim is to help our passengers travel paperless, without the need for passports and IDs,’’ Emirates Group Security divisional vice president Dr Abdulla Al Hashimi said.“Biometric boarding is one more step in streamlining processes at our hub using digital technology, saving our customers time and giving them peace of mind.“We are talking with authorities of several countries to make security using facial recognition technology more acceptable and accessible.”The announcement came as global aviation security symposium AVSEC Global 2019 was being held in Dubai.Emirates currently flies to New York, Newark, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.
Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… dan frommer What’s the takeaway from Yahoo’s recent CEO fiasco? Don’t lie on your corporate bio, for one, and make sure no one else has lied on your behalf. But the real lesson has nothing to do with falsified credentials.Sure, the world will remember Scott Thompson as the Yahoo CEO who got fired over a fake computer science degree, but the context is crucial: A battle with Yahoo shareholder Dan Loeb for control of the company. If not for Loeb, we may never have found out about Thompson’s juiced resume, and he might still be CEO. The real lesson is: Beware the activist investor.Four months had passed since Thompson’s appointment as Yahoo CEO, and no one had questioned his education. His relevant experience at PayPal? Sure, at first. But not his computer science degree. In fact, many of us actually thought that especially qualified him for the Yahoo job.In hindsight, Yahoo obviously should have investigated Thompson’s background more thoroughly. (And shame on us in the press for missing this one!) But even if Yahoo had found the discrepancy after Thompson was named CEO, it might have quietly corrected the mistake and hoped no one noticed. It is possible to survive a scandal over a college degree you wish you’d earned but didn’t. When RadioShack CEO David Edmondson resigned in 2006 after a newspaper reported that his two supposed degrees were invented and that he was facing a trial for DUI charges, the company said its board had known about “some, but definitely not all” of the issues. (I suppose it makes a difference which ones.) But former Bausch & Lomb CEO Ronald Zarrella stayed around for years after he was busted for falsely claiming an MBA from New York University. In this case, there was no pushing anything under the rug. it was Loeb himself who outed Thompson, in a letter to Yahoo’s board that he made public in a press release.“According to the Yahoo! Form 10-K/A, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on April 27, 2012, newly-hired Chief Executive Officer, Scott Thompson, ‘holds a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and computer science’ from Stonehill College,” it read. “A rudimentary Google search reveals a Stonehill College alumni announcement stating that Mr. Thompson’s degree is in accounting only.” Whoops.Did Loeb actually care about Thompson’s level of educational attainment? Probably not. This was a power play, pure and simple. And it worked. (Note that Loeb’s activist website, ValueYahoo, is already taken down.) If Loeb hadn’t hit the jackpot with the degree accusation – or if Thompson and Yahoo successfully brushed it off – he would have come back, again and again, until either he or his adversary crumbled. But with the mess Yahoo is in – even after Thompson’s four months on the job – Loeb finally had the mob on his side. And now he’s on top. Tags:#web#Yahoo 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts
Jamaica’s Senate Begins debate on National Identification and Registration Bill Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Two boys die, bicycle and van collide in St. Catherine, Jamaica Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppKINGSTON, Feb. 24 (JIS) – The Ministry of Health is reporting that of the notification of 14 deaths suspected to be related to Chikungunya, two of those have so far been confirmed as having had the virus. According to Acting Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Marion Bullock-DuCasse, of the 14 cases notified, there was insufficient data for five and of the remaining nine, six met the case definition. “Three cases did not meet the case definition for ChikV, so we cannot say they were ChikV related deaths because the persons did not have ChikV. Two of the six remaining cases were confirmed in the lab as having had ChikV, one tested negative and the other three are still under investigation,” she explained. Speaking at a JIS ‘Think Tank’ today (February 24), Dr. DuCasse said the Ministry is aware of reports in the press indicating that persons have died of ChikV. “The cause of death would have to be looked at. Some people may have had a chronic illness and ChikV would cause more severe symptoms, but not necessarily cause their death. We have to be very careful in not giving the impression that everybody who has had ChikV, whether suspected or confirmed and has died, that it is due to ChikV. The Ministry can assist in terms of investigation and helping to clarify exactly what the cause of death was,” she noted. Dr. Bullock-DuCasse said the Ministry continues to remind the public that persons who are in certain groups are at risk for more severe complications. These, she reiterated, include children, the elderly and those with underlying conditions, particularly persons with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension or asthma. As of February 19, the Ministry has had 4,979 notifications of ChikV, which mean that doctors have submitted this information. Of that number, 1,670 meet the case definition. “It is important to note that the suspected cases are from those reported and that it is evident that the majority of cases have not been reported to the Ministry, bearing in mind that persons who are ill and do not seek medical attention cannot be included in the Ministry figures. Those figures include those notified, then reviewed to see if they meet the case definition of ChikV, and that is the number that is used to denote the suspected cases,” Dr. Bullock-DuCasse emphasised. “If a person sees a doctor, But the case is not reported, the Ministry cannot count it. This holds true for every disease outbreak,” she added. The Acting Chief Medical Officer said the Ministry is urging the public, medical practitioners and the health team in general to report cases they may suspect to be a ChikV related death to the Ministry of Health. She also issued a reminder that ChikV is a Class 1 Notifiable Disease which means that it should be reported immediately on suspicion to the Parish Health Department or the Ministry of Health.
