first_imgThe NSA 04 Gunners, a U12 boys soccer team based in Holmdel, recently competed at the Dallas Cup XXVII International Soccer Tournament. Teams participating represented the U.S, England, Canada, Costa Rica, South Africa, Iraq, El Salvador, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and Trinidad/Tobago. The Gunners won their first three games – 1-0 against Texas Lonestar Red of Dallas, Texas; 3-2 against CFC Italia III of Fountain Valley, Calif.; and 1-0 against Club Pachuga of Mexico – winning their bracket and reaching the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, the team lost to eventual tournament winner the Texas Longhorns (of Dallas), 2-1. Playing for the Gunners were Seamus Conway, Ross Tetro, Zachery Hicks, Sean O’Neill, Casey O’Gorman, Mael Corboz, Corey Atanda, Kyle J. Depontes, Matthew Sawaged, Alex Ramos, Nathaniel Monteverdi, Markhus Lacroix, Brendan McSherry ,Andrew Bregna, Nicholas Villani and Jake Newinski. The team, which is currently ranked No. 1 in New Jersey and No. 9 in the nation, is coached by Tab Ramos and Don Green. The U12 Middletown Warriors extended their USABL (United States Amateur Baseball League) record to 2-0 with a 7-4 victory over the Jersey Shore Outlaws. The Warrior bats were booming with a 12-hit attack, led by Nico Giaimo’s three hits, two runs scored and five stolen bases. Howie Brey had two hits, one run scored and three RBIs, while Matt Olton belted a double, single, one run scored and had two RBIs. Chris “Kee” Zampini, Bill Nerney (one run scored), James McIntosh, Brandon Hall (two stolen bases) and Terance Scanlon (one run scored) each had a hit. Thomas Crossan had a base on balls and scored. Pitcher Howie Brey went five innings and had five strikeouts for the win. Nico Giaimo came in for the save in the sixth. The Warrior defense was sparked by Thomas Crossan, Josh Gruspier, Michael McDavitt, Erik Obsteins. The Middletown Soccer Club will hold tryouts for club teams on May 15-18 at Lincroft Acres in Middletown. Middletown Soccer Club is a Travel Soccer Club, with over 25 teams that participate in the following leagues : MOSA, JCSL, MAPS and JAGS.
